SFA and EyeEm Workshop Welcomes José Cabaço, Tutes, and Thomas Welch

By |2019-03-04T03:36:45+00:00May 12th, 2018|Uncategorized|

Space for Arts and EyeEm hosted José Cabaço, Tutes, and Thomas Welch for a stimulating workshop on brand photography in a welcoming West Village studio. The three speakers, each with a wealth of experience, were invited to share their stories and secrets to success in shooting for brands. From the photographers in the audience, it was only positive feedback and rave reviews.  Rarely is there an intimate setting where photographers not only have access to these talented creatives, but were able to mix, mingle, socialize and connect in a way that impacts careers.

An issue with technology altered the intended speaker order in a move that could be likened to divine intervention. The change produced an organic flow of presentations; each talk seemed to parallel the typical career path, growing in sophistication, delving into more advanced niches, and ultimately touching upon many of the […]

How Sketching Creates Great Photography

By |2019-03-04T02:56:53+00:00October 25th, 2017|News|

Leading up to our event with The Society of Publication Designers with Art Streiber and Michele Romero we were able to get some time with Michele to talk process. As the senior photo editor at Entertainment Weekly she is often charged with creating iconic cover images in short time frames. At Space for Arts we know that finding the perfect photo studio in New York or location in Los Angeles is just one part of the process.

Sketching and reference have been essential tools for Michele, sparking collaboration and creative thinking at a weekly magazine —particularly in creating covers. Below she shares sketches and reference images for shoots with some of the most popular entertainment franchises out today including, The Walking Dead, Mr. Roboto, Stranger Things and Guardians of the Galaxy.

By |2017-06-22T16:41:50+00:00June 22nd, 2017|Uncategorized|

For our second Pop-up collaboration, Space for Arts joined with The Society of Publication Designers at one of our favorite shooting kitchens. Photographer Noah Fecks and Food Stylist Victoria Granof spoke about their new personal collaboration Toast Water.

About Toast Water:

“Toast Water is a culinary art book created by photographer Noah Fecks and renowned food stylist and author Victoria Granof. Together they illustrated vintage recipes from Noah’s Nana as a bound volume of inspiring photographs and original text. The size, binding and cover of the book is inspired by children’s holy books and was printed at a press that specializes in the manufacturing of Torahs.”

It was a boisterous night discussing the sometimes beautiful sometimes hysterical Toast Water.

Langdon Clay ‘Cars’ New York City, 1974 ‐ 1976

By |2019-03-04T03:06:03+00:00April 21st, 2017|Uncategorized|

We’re fascinated by this new book from Langdon Clay. Cars were an indispensable aspect of twentieth‐century culture, both for their utility and aesthetics. From 1974 to 1976, Langdon Clay photographed the cars he encountered while wandering the streets of New York City and nearby Hoboken, New Jersey at night. Shot in Kodachrome with a Leica and deftly lit with then new sodium vapor lights, the pictures feature a distinct array of makes and models set against the gritty details of their surrounding urban and architectural environments, and occasionally the ghostly presence of people.

Langdon Clay was born in New York City in 1949. He grew up in New Jersey and Vermont and attended school in New Hampshire and Boston. Clay moved to New York in 1971 and spent the next sixteen years photographing there, around the country and in Europe for various magazines and books. In 1987 he […]
