Amy V. Cooper on Using our Strengths to Bring Vision & Voice into Alignment

...So much of what I’ve learned over the past few years of working with photographers and creatives, and working in the photo industry, is that so much of it is arbitrary. There’s no real standard for pricing or marketing. Everyone works differently, and mindset is a big part of running a freelance business. I have been doing more studying in the area of mindset, and offering new services to my clients that are focused on mindset, clarity, and authenticity. Instead of teaching my clients to follow a formula, I work with them to create an individual strategy based on what works for them. The photography and advertising industries have changed so much, especially now that influencers and Instagram and social media set the pace. The old ways of having reps and using directories are not working. I try to help photographers and other creatives figure out what their passion is, and instead of looking outside of themselves, we build their business strategy from their authentic desires.

Leaning into Uncertainty – Lead with Authenticity

Leaning into uncertainty to connect and lead with authenticity: Mary Dail discusses essential elements of women’s success

As a pandemic ignited around the world in 2020, many people sought a safe space to live and work while waiting for the time when being together was no longer a risk. A sanctuary space was especially important to Mary Dail, owner and creative director of Big Leo Productions. While the pandemic raged, Dail suffered an unimaginable loss—the death of Mary’s husband Andreas, just 46 years old, from a sudden heart attack. To say his loss rocked Mary’s world would be an understatement. At a time when the world was already upside down, to suffer the loss of her best friend, business partner, life partner, and father to their young son, Loki, and her stepdaughters, was an especially cruel blow.

Yet just seven months after losing Andreas, Mary […]

Mentorship & Networking w/ Shelly Waldman – Cornerstones of Professional Growth

Business consultant and photographer Shelly Waldman talks mentorship and networking—the cornerstones of professional growth

Shelly Waldman was always a photographer, even if she didn’t get her professional start until late in her career. Growing up in a house filled with photographs, and with parents who photographed the big and small moments in their work and family lives, Shelly internalized the importance of seeing and being seen. After more than a decade and a half spent working in public relations, marketing, and finance in the pro sports and banking arenas, an international move became the impetus for Shelly to pick up her camera and rediscover her love of—and gift for—photography.

As an expat in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Shelly turned to photography to help her make sense of her new surroundings. She went about documenting her and her husband’s experiences in their new city, enrolling in […]

I Got You—An Interview with Smeeta Mahanti

Smeeta Mahanti is a successful lifestyle and editorial photographer who started out with a degree in education—a field she loved for its focus on the developing brain. But after a move from Michigan to California and the discovery that she was going to be a mom, Smeeta decided to stay at home for a while and focus on the wonder that was her son.

In those early days following him around as he discovered the world, Smeeta took out a camera and began to document his life. Maybe that was the inquisitive educator in her, but she laughs when she says it was more to show her husband what their son was doing while he was away at work than anything else. In any case, these weren’t your average posed photographs. They were images of discovery—both for Smeeta and her son. If he was about to eat a […]

Looks Galore: Cass Bird

Cass Bird has a whole career of documenting and portraying femininities, so it makes sense that she shot this amazing group portrait of the leaders of the Women’s March on Washington for Vogue in a Bronx warehouse studio. It’s the intensity of this shot that grabs us, the engagement of each and every subject as they look poised to burst out of the frame like sprinters leaping out of the starting gate. But the shot also telegraphs the electricity of the group, ready to act together for a common purpose– while notably the story behind the photo shoot tells that this was only the second time the contingent had all met each other.  Iconic.
